Sticky Rice is the only event based out of Palm Springs, California that affords gay Asian bears and their admirers a platform for intimate gatherings, facilitating meaningful bonds, and authentic interactions that celebrate diversity and shared experiences. My current photography project is called Chunky Asian Boys. I have been traveling around Asia—Tokyo, Osaka, Taipei, Bangkok, Kuala Lumpur, Ho Chi Minh and Shanghai. My models represent the LGBTQ community, especially the fast-growing, gay Asian bear communities. When we think of a typical gay man, we often produce a white boy with a cute face, perhaps with feminine elegance, wearing an oversized white T-shirt tucked into skinny jeans. We might also imagine a more traditionally masculine gay man: a well-tanned hunky boy with six-pack abs. However, many different kinds of gay men exist in the pan-gay culture, and only a few in the community live up to these common stereotypes.
