Hernandez works in Caibarien, a town close to Santa Clara -- a city synonymous with revolutionary icon Che Guevara but also Cuba's most LGBT-friendly town. Before the Revolution, Cuba was a traditional, conservative island controlled by large landowners, business groups and the church. Like most other Latin countries, machismo was very much the prevailing culture and, as such, outside of a handful of in-the-know venues in Havana, the LGBTQ community in Cuba was largely underground. Any hopes that the Revolution, which reached its denouement at the end of , would usher in a new period of acceptance or even tolerance was quickly dashed.
El Mejunje (Spanish for The Mixture), also known as El Mejunje de Silverio after the surname of its founder and director, Ramón Silverio, [1][2] is a Cuban LGBT cultural center and space [3] located in the city of Santa Clara. THERE WERE three of them. The one on the left was a macho boy, all muscles and cool hair. On the right, linking arms with him, was a petite, girly boy, camping it up and twirling a parasol.
We didn’t want to wait for the show at 10pm so came round to the bar area. Pulled up 2 chairs and drank great Cuba Libre’s at the bar. The club was opened I believe in and it’s the LGBT place in Santa Clara. Staff made us so welcome. It was a great place to sit and people watch with great music playing in the background. Havana Times sat down with its founder Ramon Silverio to talk about the center now that it is about to celebrate its 35th anniversary. RS: No, not at all. I think that if I had set out with the plan to create an important space, I might not have been able to achieve it.
SANTA CLARA, CUBA—Crowds of gay and trans people wait outside a ruined hotel with trees growing out the windows. Inside, a disco beat begins to pound. The throng files in and starts dancing, while a couple of lesbians kiss passionately in the middle of the courtyard. This is not a trendy nightclub in Havana—we’re in a small city in the central province of Villa Clara, an area that many. Slick vintage cars cruise down the bustling streets past colourful colonial buildings, buzzing with lively music and warm people — Cuba has retained its nostalgic charm. Get ready to be amazed! Trinidad — the Colonial Jewel.
